Brief Report:
KEBER AND HJALMARSON CROWNED AS WORLD CHAMPIONS AGAIN
At the end of August, best crossminton players of the world came together to Berlin to compete at the 3rd ICO Crossminton World Championships. In the following three days, 489 players from 24 countries displayed incredible performances and new crossminton World Champions were crowned.
No surprises were seen in Women’s category as reigning World Champion Jasmina Keber from Slovenia won the exciting final match against the home favourite Janet Köhler, also World Champion from 2011: “Due to the loss in the final match of the 2011 World Championships, I wished to play Janet in the finals again. In the match itself I had to adapt my playstyle to hers, which was a good tactical decision, but not what I wanted to show in the final match. Nonetheless, i am super happy to be win the title again.” In Open Division, legendary Swedish player Per Hjalmarson added another title to his tally by defeating Ukrainian Mykhailo Mandryk in a super-tight final match, as commented by Per: “It feels really really good. It has been a really tough tournament. There are a lot of good players. Just after the group matches I ran into my fellow friend Mattias Aronsson and managed to beat him but it was a tough match. Later I had quite a good draw until the final against Misha Mandryk. The final was tricky though. I had 3 match points in the second set and lost, and then 5 match points against me in the third but I managed to turn it around and win. It feels really good. I’m very happy.” Hjalmarson has also won the Open Doubles with his compatriot Mattias Aronsson, MIxed doubles were won by Swedish pair Rebecca Nielsen/Melker Ekberg and the Women’s Doubles by Polish players Janina Karasek and Marta Soltys.
In junior categories, Nico Franke (GER) and Eliška Andrlova (CZE) won in U18 categories, Mateo Šepić (CRO) and Lori Škerl (SVN) in U14 categories and Mateusz Drumlak (POL) and Pika Rogelj (SVN) in U12 categories. Junior Doubles were won by Slovak pair Adam Kakula/Patrik Turna and Slovenian pair Danaja Knez/Rebeka Škerl.
In senior categories, Jan Ščavnicky Sr. (SVK) won the O40 category, Piotr Borowiec (POL) O50 category and Nora Gaal (HUN) the female O35 category.
With 3 gold medals, Sweden finished on top of the elite categories medals table, with Slovenia second and Poland third.
