DOMINATION OF KEBER AND HJALMARSON CONTINUES
The 5th ICO Crossminton World Championhships began with a spectacular opening ceremony in Budapest. The president of the International Crossminton Organization Matjaz Sustersic welcomed the players, coaches and also introduced new members of the ICO Board.
On Thursday group matches and the finals of the U12, U14 boys and girls, mixed doubles, women doubles and open doubles were played in the Spike Hall. Czech players took most gold medals on the first day of the championships. Natalie Krpálkova in U12 girls, Zuzana Holesinska in U14 girls and Matej Krupicka in U14 boys are new world champions. Another gold medal was taken by Slovak Jan Scavincky Jr. in U12 boys category. In doubles categories we could also see amazing battles. In Open category the No.3 seed doubles, David Zimmermanns/Patrick Schüsseler were crowned as a world champions. In women doubles an unfortunate injury decided the final after the No.1 seed Andrea Horn/Anja Rolfes duo had to retire and Slovenian pair Lori Škerl/Danaja Knez became new world champions. Mixed doubles also played their matches on the first day, where surprisingly the No. 21 seeded pair Yurina Abe Yurina/Akihiko Nishimura won the gold medal.
On Friday the seniors also started the competition. They played in five categories, all of them in doubles, but only two finals were held to due the busy schedule on the second day of the tournament. Two other categories are concluded on Friday. The U18 male and famale competitions finished with the glory for Mauritius players as Shameem Elaheebocus and Sendilla Mourat became new world champions. In the final Sendilla she won against a 15-year old Hungarian player Georgina Veres. Other postponed finals were then played on Saturday afternoon.
On Saturday the main events concluded in Budapest. In the Open category Per Hjalmarson won the final against Myhailo Mandyrk, and in the female category Jasmina Keber won the gold medal against her 17-year old compatriot and protégé Lori Škerl. Lori has been training crossminton with Jasmina as her trainer since she was 10 years old.
On the final day of the 5th ICO Crossminton World Championships juniors played the doubles matches. In U18 male doubles Polish players Maciej Filipowicz/Szymon Michniewicz won the gold medal and in U18 female doubles Nika Miskulin/Gala Zukic from Croatia became new world champions. The other gold medals were awarded in senior categories. In female categories Hungarian ladies dominated. Helga Braun won the gold in O40 and Zsuzsanna Gerber triumphed in O50 category. Patrick Schüsseler won gold in male O40 category and László Rácz in O50.
At the end, Hungary finished on top of the medals table with 6 gold medals in total in official and non-official categories, and Poland won the most medals with 18. Altoghether, there were 14 countries which won medals in Budapest.
