DANAJA KNEZ AND DAVID ZIMMERMANNS SURPRISE THE CROSSMINTON COMMUNITY IN FRANCE
The highlight of the 2016 crossminton season saw the European crossminton community gather in Gouesnou, small town near Brest in French Normandy to compete the 5th crossminton European Championships. After 3 days of intense on-court battles, a couple of young guns emerged at the top with 19-year old Danaja Knez of Slovenia winning the Women’s category and 20-year old David Zimmermanns of Germany winning the Open Division.
In her first big tournament final, Danaja Knez showed no nerves by defeating another higher ranked player Rebecca Nielsen (SWE) in straight sets. After an incredible run that saw her eliminate Santa Paegle, Marta Urbanik and Jasmina Keber, young Slovenian was understandably thrilled: “I feel phenomenal as this was not something I expected to happen. From match to match I played better, so I am looking forward to the rest the season.” In Open Division, David Zimmermanns had a similar run to claim the European Champion title by defeating compatriot Sönke Kaatz in a thrilling 3-sets final match. To make it a perfect tournament for him, David Zimmermanns also won the Open Doubles together with Patrick Schüsseler, Mixed Doubles were won by Swedish pair Rebecca Nielsen/Melker Ekberg, while the Women’s Doubles were won by German pair Andrea Horn/Franziska Ottrembka.
In junior categories, Lori Škerl (SVN) and Nico Franke (GER) won in U18 categories, while Marko Jerković (CRO) and Adrian Janczunski (LTU) won the U14 and U12 mixed categories. U18 doubles were won by pairs Lori Škerl/Rebeka Škerl (SVN) and Szymon Wisniewski and Szymon Andrzejewski (POL).
In senior categories, Morten Pasche (NOR) won the O40 category, Piotr Borowiec (POL) O50 category and Sabina Schabek (POL) the female O35 category.
